Nike Sandwich Recall Expanded

You probably heard about the Landshire Nike All-American sandwiches that were recalled a few days ago.  Well, now that recall has been expanded to include Landshire Nike Super Poor Boy sandwiches, too.

In a statement that we're just seeing today, but which was actually dated yesterday, Landshire says that this expansion brings the total cases of recalled sandwiches up to more than 17,300.

You can identify the recalled sandwiches by looking for a lot number printed on either the back or side of your sandwich's wrappings.   Affected lot numbers run from 11 237 6 to 11 285 6.  The center numbers--the 237 and the 285--are the important numbers.  Those are Julian dates representing the beginning and end of the recall production period.  The sandwiches that are recalled right now are:

  • Landshire Nike All-American
  • Landshire Nike Super Poor Boy
You may have seen these sandwiches at supermarkets, gas stations and convenience stores.  They're sold as individual sandwiches and as multi-packs that can contain up to 8.

Landshire says that no actual Listeria infections have been linked to these foods but if you have any of these on hand you're urged to return them to your place of purchase for a refund.

Allergy Alert, Recall for Ponchatrain Sauce Mix

Texas-based Emporium Packaging & Spice has announced a recall of all its Ponchatrain Sauce Mix product because the mix may have milk and soy ingredients in it.  Those milk and soy ingredients are not disclosed on the product's label

Emporium Packaging & Spice says that the sauce mix was sold in the company's retail store in Temple, Texas.  It came in clear plastic bags (0.17 ounces) with paper labels that were white and red.  The labels bear the phrase "Emporium Packaging & Spice Co. Ponchatrain Sauce Mix".

Emporium says that it has logged no reports of any allergic reactions connected to the recalled sauce mix.  The recall was prompted, the company says, by the discovery that the label did not mention soy or milk ingredients.  It was, says the Emporium's press release about the recall, simply an oversight.

If you have any of the realled Ponchatrain Sauce Mix on hand you're urged to take it back to your place of purchase for a refund.  If you have questions about the recall you can contact Emporium by calling (254) 774-9098 during normal business hours.

Frozen Egg Product Recalled Over Salmonella Concerns

In a press release issued last evening American Egg Products announced a recall of its 5-pound cartons of frozen egg products.  The fear is that the product may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria, the company announced.

This product was not sold to retail stores but was shipped only to 3 companies that either distributed the egg products or used the egg products in further food production.  Those companies were not named in American Egg Products' press release.

The company says that no illnesses have been reported but admits that the recall was prompted by routine sampling that found Salmonella in a finished carton of the product.  American Egg says that it is working with the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, to find the source of the contamination.

The recalled cartons of egg products will bear the lot code #272-1.  If you have these on hand you're urged to return them to your place of purchase for a refund.

The FDA has provided a photo of the recalled American Egg Products here.

Fresh & Easy Recalls Spinach Over Listeria Fears

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Inc., has announced a voluntary recall of its fresh Washed Spinach due to Listeria contamination fears.  This recall only covers 12 ounce bags with an "Enjoy by" code of OCT 16, says a company press release that was dated October 21, 2011.

Fresh & Easy says that it has heard of no actual Listeria infections linked to the apparent contamination but admits that the recall was issued after tests done during routine sampling turned up a positive Listeria test in a bag of finished spinach.  The test was initiated under the FDA's routine sampling program.

If you still have any of this spinach you're asked to dispose of it immediately  The recalled Fresh & Easy Washed Spinach was sold in Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores in these states:

  • Arizona
  • Nevada
  • California
If you still have the bag or your sales receipt you can also take those to any Fresh & Easy store, the company says, for a refund.

Nike All-American Sandwiches Recalled

Landshire's press release about its recall of Nike All-Amerian sandwiches doesn't offer a lot of information but what we know for sure is that the company has issued a voluntary recall of more than 1750 cases of the foods over concerns that they may contain Listeria bacteria.  In its statement, Lanshire said only that testing done during routine sampling by North Carolina' Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services prompted the recall.  Landshire's press release does not actually say that Listeria was found but a statement issued by NCDA&CS director Dan Ragan does.

Customers who believe they may have eaten these sandwiches (or who may still have them on hand) will want to look for packing with these phrases and codes:

  • Nike All-American, 7.25 ounces with UPC codes of 0 9748801741 5 and lot numbers of 11 237 6.
Landshire says that no other sandwiches are covered by the recall and Nike All-Ameican sandwiches with other UPCs or lot numbers are also unaffected.   Neither Lanshire nor North Carolina health officials have logged any reports of any Listeria infections resulting from this recall.  If you have these sandwiches in your home you're urged to return them to your place of purchase for a refund.  You can also contact Landshire directly if you have questions.  That number is 800-468-3354.

Listeria Found In Yamaya Brand Masago

Yamaya USA has announced a recall of its masago product because a sample of the product, which is cappeline roe, has tested positive for  Listeria.  In its press release the company disclosed that testing done by the FDA at Yamaya's Torrance, California facility found the bacterium in finished masago products.

Yamaya says it has halted both its production and distribution of the masago and is working with the Food and Drug Administration to find the source of the apparent contamination.  Customers, the company says, will want to look for 2 pound plastic tubs with this verbiage printed on white labels:

  • Masago (Capelin Roe),  “Item No. 09867”

The roe was sent to food stores in

  • Los Angeles
  • Baltimore
  • Atlanta
The recalled roe was also, says Yamaya, sent to stores in Mexico.  Anyone who has this product on hand is urged to take it back to their place of purchase for a refund.  The FDA has a photo of the recalled Yamaya brand masago on its website.

Murray Cookies Recalled For Pecan Allergen

We're just seeing this today but back on October 14th Murray Biscuit Company issued a recall of some of its Murray Sugar Free Chocolate Chip cookies due to a production mixup.  The boxes say "Murray Sugar Free Chocolate Chip Cookies" but they may instead contain Murray Sugar Free Chocolate Chip Pecan cookies.

Murray says that only 12 cases are actually mis-labeled but the company is recalling 900 more as a precaution.  All the recalled cookies have a "best if used by" code of APR1712 EA6.  They were shipped to these states:

  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Tennessee
No allergic reactions have reported but Murray was apparently only alerted to the problem after a customer discovered the mixup.

The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, is providing images of the recalled cookies.  You can see a photo of both the front and back labels here.
