Manning Beef Recalled for "Unsanitary Conditons", E. Coli

Manning Beef, located in Pico Rivera, California, is recalling around 80,000 pounds of beef products due to E. coli contamination that the USDA says was fostered--at least in part--by what the agency characterizes as "unsanitary conditions".  In a statement released Friday the agency's Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS, said that the company has had an "unusually high number of confirmed positive tests" for E. coli on its beef "trimmings".  Recalled are:
  • Combo bins of BroPack Inc Beef Manufacturing Trimmings "65/35, 50/50 or 85/15" produced on Sept. 23, 2011
  • Combo bins of Paso Prime Beef Manufacturing Trimmings "65/35, 50/50 or 85/15" produced on Sept. 23, 2011
  • 30 and 60 lb. boxes of primal cuts, subprimal cuts and boxed beef produced on Sept. 23, 2011
Boxes of these products should bear a USDA stamp with the code EST. # 934 in it.  Unfortunately, the agency says, because these trimmings were intended for further processing the finished packages may not have the code on them when they're ready for retail sale.
